In Australia franchising is a well accepted method for business activity. Extensive statistics are now available . The industry is assisted by the Franchise Council of Australia . Some impressive statistics on fast growing franchise systems was published in February 2011 .

The franchise sector represents 14% of the Australian national economy through the operation of almost 1,000 franchise systems. It is estimated that there are in excess of 70,000 units and outlets employing almost 500,000 people in full time and part time employment. The Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) represents over 700 franchise systems and processionals. The FCA is the peak representative body for the $128 billion AUD franchise sector in Australia.

In excess of 25% of Australian based franchise systems are currently franchising internationally. The primary focus of expansion is in to New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, China/Hong Kong, India, United Kingdom, EU, Brazil and the United States of America. Australian franchisors like Cartridge World have aggressively expanded into more that 50 countries.

Planning An International Franchise

Australian franchises have found that it is particularly attractive to expand overseas. Statistics indicate that over one quarter of Australian based franchises have now established outlets in at least one overseas country.

To maximise the success of an international expansion, extensive planning is required and an acceptance that a realistic time frame must be taken into account.
